Purpose and Application

Industrial processes involving combustible materials necessitate robust measures to manage explosion risks. Interconnected equipment, while operationally essential, can facilitate the spread of an explosion from its origin. An explosion barrier shutter valve is installed as a critical line of defense within these connecting ducts. Its role is to function as an automatic, fast-closing barrier, activated by the explosion event itself, to contain the flames and overpressure within a designated area, thereby preventing catastrophic secondary explosions and protecting adjacent plant sections.

This safety device serves as an active isolation component within pneumatic conveying and process ventilation systems located in potentially explosive atmospheres. It is specifically designed to halt the transmission of explosion effects, contributing to overall plant safety and asset protection.

Distinctive Features

  • Immediate Barrier Formation: The valve is engineered to detect the leading shockwave of an explosion and initiate closure with extreme speed, establishing a physical barrier before the arrival of the flame front.

  • Robust Construction Profile: Fabricated using materials selected for high tensile strength and environmental resistance, ensuring reliable performance under the combined stresses of an explosion event and long-term industrial exposure.

  • User-Centric Design Philosophy: The compact form factor and inclusion of service access points simplify installation within space-constrained pipe racks and facilitate routine inspection without complete system shutdown.

  • System Integration Readiness: For enhanced operational oversight, the valve can be supplied with integral limit switches, enabling remote indication of its status (Open/Tripped) on central control panels.

Validated Containment Performance
The valve's design ensures rapid and reliable closure, a critical factor for successful explosion isolation. Its performance targets are aligned with international standards for explosion protection equipment, providing a verified means to decouple interconnected volumes and limit the extent of potential damage.

Designed for Sustained Reliability
A focus on high-quality materials, precision machining, and proven mechanical principles results in a product known for its durability and long service life, ensuring continuous protection with minimal maintenance intervention.

Unrestricted Operational Flow
During normal, non-hazardous operation, the barrier plate is held completely clear of the flow path, ensuring zero impact on system pressure dynamics and material conveyance efficiency. The safety function remains entirely dormant until activated.

Working Principle

The valve operates by monitoring for the specific pressure transient that signals the onset of an explosion. A certified pressure detection unit, mounted on the valve body, continuously samples the internal pressure. When a rapid pressure rise exceeding the set threshold is detected, it sends a signal to disengage the hold-open device. The barrier plate is then free to move, and is driven swiftly to its closed position by an integral spring mechanism. Upon reaching the closed position, a robust over-center latch engages, locking the plate securely in place to withstand the full force of the ongoing explosion.

Following an incident and after safety protocols have been followed, the valve can be manually reset to its standby (open) position. A visual inspection for any debris or damage is recommended. Under normal conditions, the plate is retained in the open position by a low-force magnetic or mechanical device.

Technical Specifications (Narrative Format)

This product line is available in a complete size spectrum. The specifications are provided here in descriptive form: The DN100 valve has overall dimensions of Length 409 mm, Width 324 mm, and Height 497 mm, with an explosion protection rating of ST1 and ST2. The DN150 and DN200 valves share the same dimensional footprint of 587 mm L x 386 mm W x 550 mm H and are both certified for ST1 and ST2 applications. The DN250 valve measures 628x443x624 mm (LxWxH) and carries ST1 & ST2 ratings. For medium-scale systems: the DN300 valve dimensions are 778x507x693 mm (ST1, ST2); the DN350 is 868x641x788 mm (ST1, ST2); and the DN400 is 946x641x813 mm (ST1, ST2). The DN450 and DN500 valves are identical in size at 1093x795x922 mm and are both rated for ST1 and ST2 conditions. Larger system options include: the DN550 valve at 1240x885x1020 mm (ST1, ST2); and the DN600 at 1240x885x1074 mm (ST1, ST2). Finally, the DN650 valve dimensions are 1300x989x1191 mm, and the DN700 are 1390x989x1191 mm, both designed for use in ST1-rated environments. All dimensions are external body measurements.

Guidelines for Operation and Servicing

  • Start-Up Confirmation Procedure: Prior to system energization, it is a mandatory safety practice to confirm that the barrier shutter is fully open and that the release mechanism is armed and ready.

  • Periodic Inspection Regimen: Adhere to a scheduled maintenance plan, performing visual and functional inspections at least monthly. In harsh or high-usage environments, consider increasing the inspection frequency.

  • Verification After Any Service Work: Completion of any maintenance task must include a full operational test cycle to validate proper opening, closing, and latching functionality before the system is approved for return to service.
