Type: In-Line or End-of-Line Deflagration Arrester
Material: Housing & Element: 316L or 316LVM Stainless Steel, all wetted parts Electropolished (Ra < 0.8 µm).
Key Feature: Crevice-free, sanitary design suitable for Clean-in-Place (CIP) and Steam-in-Place (SIP) procedures. Non-shedding element.
Certifications: 3-A Symbol possible, materials comply with FDA 21 CFR, EU 1935/2004. EHEDG compliant design.
Typical Use: Vent lines on bioreactors, fermenters, solvent recovery systems, and process vents in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food, and beverage industries.
Overview
In industries where product purity and prevention of microbial contamination are paramount, standard industrial flame arresters are not acceptable. This sanitary flame arrester is engineered specifically for hygienic and aseptic processing. It features fully electropolished internal surfaces, sanitary clamp connections (Tri-Clamp, ISO), and a diaphragm-sealed or fully welded element design that eliminates dead legs and crevices. It can withstand validated CIP and SIP cycles, ensuring it integrates seamlessly into sterile processes while providing essential flashback protection for vents handling alcohol or solvent vapors.
Features & Benefits
Hygienic Design & Finish: Electropolished surfaces and lack of crevices prevent bacterial harborage and facilitate cleaning validation.
Sanitary Connections: Tri-Clamp or ISO flange connections allow for quick, aseptic installation and removal.
CIP/SIP Compatible: Constructed from materials and with seals that withstand typical cleaning and sterilization temperatures and chemicals.
Product Protection: Prevents contamination of the process stream from arrester materials or debris.
Non-Shedding Element: The element is constructed to prevent release of particulate matter into the vapor stream.
How It Works
The flame quenching principle uses a sanitary metal matrix element, but it is housed within a assembly designed for cleanability. All internal corners are radiused, and the element is often welded into a cartridge that can be removed as a single unit for inspection or replacement without compromising the sanitary seal of the pipeline.
Specifications (Descriptive)
Common sizes: 1", 1.5", 2", 3" Tri-Clamp and DN25, DN40, DN50, DN80 ISO flanges. Pressure ratings are typically low (e.g., PN10) for vent systems. All wetted materials are 316L Stainless Steel, electropolished. Gaskets are platinum-cured silicone or EPDM. Documentation can include Material Certificates (FDA, EU), Surface Finish Certificates, and Cleanability Test Reports.
Q&A
Q: How do you clean or inspect the element?
A: The entire element cartridge can usually be removed by disconnecting the sanitary clamps. It can then be cleaned in an autoclave or via ultrasonic cleaning using validated procedures. Inspection is for cleanliness and integrity of the metal ribbons.
Q: Is this suitable for aseptic (sterile) processing?
A: Yes, the design supports aseptic requirements. For direct use in a sterile core, it can be supplied cleaned, bagged, and sterilized (e.g., via gamma irradiation) with appropriate documentation (sterility assurance level, SAL).
Q: Can it handle solvent vapors like ethanol or acetone?
A: Absolutely. It is specifically designed to protect vents from bioreactors or solvent recovery systems where such vapors are present. The element is certified for the appropriate gas group (typically IIA or IIB).
Q: What about pressure drop?
A: While the sanitary design is prioritized, pressure drop is carefully characterized. For vent systems, the drop is usually acceptable. For higher flow applications, sizing should be reviewed to ensure it doesn't impede tank breathing or pressure relief.
