Pre-Scored Rupture Disc
Model: ZD-005 (Tensile Scored Type)
Material: SS316, Hastelloy, Inconel, etc.
Burst Range: 0.5 barg to 100+ barg (broad range).
Key Feature: Controlled, predictable opening pattern. Can be non-fragmenting.
Design: Laser or chemically etched score lines on the dome create weakened sections.
Typical Use: General industrial overpressure protection, where controlled opening is desired.
Overview
The pre-scored forward-acting rupture disc is the versatile workhorse of overpressure protection. It operates on the tensile rupture principle but features precision score lines that dictate the tear pattern. This control allows for designs that open fully without detaching (non-fragmenting), or with specific petal patterns, offering a reliable and predictable solution for a vast array of general industrial applications from air receivers to hydrocarbon processing.
Features & Benefits
Controlled Burst Behavior: Predictable opening shape and size, which can aid in downstream dispersion modeling.
Wide Pressure & Size Range: Available from very low to very high pressures in almost any pipe size.
Multiple Material Options: Can be manufactured in all common industrial alloys to match service conditions.
Cost-Effective General Protection: Provides excellent performance for most standard applications.
Reliability Through Precision
The accuracy of the scoring process is critical. Our laser scoring ensures consistent depth and geometry, leading to repeatable burst performance.
How It Works
The convex dome has thin, precisely defined score lines (often a cross or star pattern). Under overpressure, tensile stress concentrates at the tips of these scores. Rupture initiates there and propagates rapidly along the score lines, causing the disc to open in a predetermined pattern (e.g., four petals).
Specifications (Descriptive)
The most common rupture disc type, available from DN15 to DN1000+. Low-pressure applications (e.g., DN200) can be as low as 0.2 barg. High-pressure applications (e.g., DN25) can exceed 100 barg. Standard stainless steel (316L) covers most needs. For higher temps/corrosion, Hastelloy C276 is used (e.g., DN50 from 3-10 barg). Standard tolerance is ±5% on burst pressure.

Q&A
Q: Is a pre-scored disc always non-fragmenting?
A: Not always. Design determines this. "Non-fragmenting" scored discs have scores that stop before the edge, retaining the petals. Other designs may allow petals to detach. The product data sheet specifies the type.
Q: How does scoring affect fatigue life?
A: Scoring creates stress concentrators, which can reduce fatigue life compared to an unscored reverse-acting disc. They are best for relatively steady pressure services, not severe cyclic duty.
Q: Can it handle liquid?
A: Yes, pre-scored forward-acting discs are suitable for liquid service, as the tensile rupture mechanism works effectively with incompressible fluids.
